Why stumps refuse to just rot away

A stump left alone takes years, sometimes decades, to break down, and it rarely goes quietly. Many trees keep pushing shoots up from the base and roots long after the trunk is cut, so the "dead" stump turns into a shrub you fight every summer. Add the mower swerving around it, the trip hazard at dusk, and the insects that move into softening wood, and that corner of the lawn is more work standing than it would be gone.

What happens below the lawn line

The grinder shaves the stump down in passes until it sits below the level of the surrounding lawn, deep enough to run grass or a garden bed over the top. It does not pull the root system; the far roots stay put and decay slowly in place, underground, where they were never bothering anyone. Grinding removes the part of the tree you actually have to live with.

What is left above ground is a mound of wood chips, and those are your call. Most people have us backfill the hole with them, knowing the spot will settle a little as the chips break down and want topping up with soil later. Or the chips can leave on the truck, or go onto your beds as free mulch.

First, what's buried nearby

The one non-negotiable step is knowing what is buried nearby. Irrigation lines, buried cable, and shallow utility runs all live in the same top foot of soil the grinder works in. The quote visit is where that gets mapped out with you, and utility locating gets handled before the grinder ever shows up. It is a scheduling step, which is to say it is the kind of step we are good at.

With a removal, or on its own

Most stumps get ground the same day their tree comes down as part of a removal, while the equipment is on site and the yard is already a work zone. Stand-alone stump visits are just as normal, though. Plenty of Broken Arrow yards came with a stump already in them, cut by somebody long gone. Either way, the job is quoted per stump at a free visit, sized by diameter and access, and booked with the same arrival window as any other work we do.
